about

Also available on iTunes, Beatport, Spotify, Amazon, Junodownload etc.

One Less Of Them is the moniker of Enoque Carrancho, a South African producer currently based in Calgary who has been active in music for multiple decades.

Carrancho debuted the moniker with 2016’s self-titled One Less Of Them EP - a showcase in the exercise of delivering cinematic, gripping tracks with the structure of house music.

While One Less Of Them’s debut album focused on tracks that felt characteristically like dance music, Singles Collection Volume 1 assembles five stand-alone, unreleased tracks that sit in their own unique worlds stylistically.
It’s an exploration of atmospheres that run the gamut from ambient, to progressive, to action-packed. It’s also a statement on the meandering musical paths that Carrancho has explored in the interim year, both as a solo artist and in doing remixes for other rising Canadian producers.

House music is taken down uncharted avenues in “Prologue,” a track marked by a four-to-the-floor beat and an eclectic soundscape of bells and percussive bass lines. Carrancho brought fellow Calgary-based instrumentalist Taylor Wright on board to supply a soaring guitar solo, a standout element of the song that momentarily creates a seamless merger between the worlds of house music and rock.

One Less Of Them’s flair for experimentation is on full display in “The Clearing.” A squelchy, distorted synth line is placed over top of orchestral strings and fast percussion fills, elements that seldom appear together, but work in concert to create full-throttle suspense and energy. As the track progresses the strings grow stronger, giving the sensation that this track is the score to the climax of a film that doesn’t yet exist.
“Siren Song” is an echoing of the golden age of ambient house and IDM. A vocal sample is stretched and shifted to varying degrees, then used as the primary instrumentation of the track alongside an array of astral synth sounds and intricate percussion. The track is also given a feeling of minimalism by the use of space to punctuate the fleeting chords.

With soft, ballad-like drums and airy, dreamlike chords, “The Beginning” is a meeting of modern downtempo electronica with cinematic drive. Sweeping ethereal melodies fade in and out, creating an introspective, lush atmosphere. During the breakdown, layers of strings in the background create new levels of emotive intensity that continue throughout the second half of the song.

“Tokyo Rising” takes on synthwave, a genre that combines retro futurism with modern electronica. The genre largely emulates the film scores of classic action movies, and “Tokyo Rising” is no exception. Tension is created from the onset with a heavily distorted, rising bass line that gives way to entrancing synth melodies. Just like the chase sequences of old, the end result is a feeling of exhilaration and unmatched boldness.
